"As an FBI special agent, I screened presidential appointees with the highest level of thoroughness and accuracy. I believe healthcare employees require nothing less."

Medstaff Screening president

About

Us

Our Story

“My favorite excuse from a criminal when I was an FBI agent?

‘I didn’t know it was against the law’.—”Hank Balevic

Healthcare has more regulations than any other industry. While the government doesn’t expect you to know each one, they penalize you if just one employee is not compliant.

And that’s why I created Medstaff Screening.

We conduct background checks for healthcare job applicants and employees using the same strategies, techniques and skills that I employed every day as a Special Agent of the FBI. That means, a laser-focus attention to detail, an unrelenting thoroughness, and an obsession for accuracy and the truth.

And because I learned a long time ago that nothing beats the human touch for revealing the whole truth, our Medstaff Screening team is committed to taking all the time needed to personally verify the completeness of each and every database finding. That’s equally true for our employee monitoring service.

Mission & Vision

MISSION: Help healthcare providers verify their compliance with all federal regulations by running employee background checks using our firsthand knowledge of the FBI’s thorough screening methods.

VISION: Become the leader in healthcare background screenings thanks to our unrivaled level of thoroughness and accuracy.

FBI-Trained FBI-Thorough

“While working a case at the FBI, the deeper I dug for information, the more satisfying the result.”—Hank Balevic

Many of the methods I used in the field every day while a Special Agent of the FBI are at the core of what makes Medstaff Screening different.

This includes thorough intelligence gathering and incomparable record-reporting.

And so, just as the FBI uses these methods to protect the general public from all sorts of threats, we use them to protect our clients as well.

About Us

Penalties

& Fines

In addition to all healthcare providers who bill Medicare and/or Medicaid,
The Office of Inspector General (OIG) for the Department of Health & Human Services aggressively investigates any and all entities involved in the healthcare industry including:

Hospitals, Home Care Providers, Assisted Living Facilities, Nursing Homes, Urgent Care Facilities, Transportation Services, Physician Group Practices, Medical Offices, and Surgical Centers. This includes their related Employees, Contractors, Sub-Contractors and Volunteer Organizations

The OIG is required to exclude from participation in all Federal healthcare programs individuals and entities convicted of Medicare or Medicaid fraud, criminal convictions for other health related fraud, theft, financial misconduct and drug related crimes.

Federal laws prohibit medical providers from billing for services ordered by, or contracting with, persons or entities that have been excluded from participating in Medicare, Medicaid or other federal health care programs.

Fines can be substantial, as much as $10,000 per day per person.
In addition, fines may be increased to $30,000 per day depending on other services offered by the healthcare provider.

For example:

  • A Rehabilitation Service in New Jersey paid over $261,000 for an employee that it knew or should have known was excluded from participation in Federal healthcare programs.

  • A Hartford Orthopedic Group paid over $102,000 for the same violation.

  • A Pennsylvania fire department paid a fine of over $24,000 for employing an Emergency Medical Technician who didn’t have a current certification.

To uncover any potential non-compliance violations and to avoid substantial OIG penalties and fines, healthcare providers must conduct thorough background checks of all their employees. This includes doctors, nurses, and office personnel, as well as janitors, contractors, sub-contractors, vendors and volunteers.

What We Offer

True Protection

Responsibility

Unlike other screening companies who use disclaimers to protect themselves, Medstaff Screening accepts full responsibility for the accuracy of the information we report to our clients. We can do this because our special investigative methods provide the most comprehensive employee background checks in the industry.

Using our FBI training for thoroughness, we do a deep dive into medical records for Federal and State exclusions, sanctions, debarment, licensing and board disciplinary action. We scrutinize State, County, Federal, Criminal and Civil Records. We also conduct a Social Security Validation/ Residence Trace, and examine Terrorist Watch Lists, Sex Offender Lists and more...

Validation

And unlike our competitors, we never use a ‘pass through system’ where information goes directly to you without confirmation. We REVIEW, COMPARE, VALIDATE, and make sure that you get what you are paying for, avoiding potential violation risks, as well as wasting valuable time and money.
